Background:
To meet CMS guidelines under LCD L35724 for Controlled Substance Monitoring and Drugs of Abuse Testing, providers must document medical necessity when prescribing and monitoring opioid therapy. This includes validated risk assessments, such as the SOAPP-R and Opioid Risk Tool (ORT), and alignment with testing frequency based on patient risk level.
Solution:
Using the Stratus DX Assessment Tool, our clients are able to implement a digital workflow for capturing opioid risk assessments directly within the LIS. Clinicians administer the SOAPP-R and ORT via custom-configured surveys, and results were automatically scored and saved to the patient record.Patients identified as “high risk” were flagged within the system, triggering recommended urine drug testing frequency (1‐3 times every 3 months), in alignment with CMS protocols. Exportable reports were generated for billing and documentation, ensuring readiness for insurance audits.
